Tis The Season

09 December 2013

It's the second week December and most of us are or are getting into the swing of holiday cheer. We are hanging our stockings, decorating trees, buying gifts and maybe even putting the elf on the shelf. I will admit November to March is my favorite time of the year. During that time I selfishly soak in every moment I can with the people in my life. I also really enjoy being able to give and get presents for Christmas. Since I was about 9 or 10 I knew that Christmas time was about Jesus. My church even had a song that said "Jesus is the reason for the season yes oh yes he is oh yes he is!!". But for so many years presents and Santa has been the reason for the season for my family and I.

Somewhere along the way in preparing to celebrate the what, we forgot the who! We were caught up in Christmas lists, wrapping paper and anything else that represented gifts. I am not saying there is anything wrong with decorating or exchanging gifts. Honestly what's a birthday party without decorations or gifts? Even more whats the use of having a birthday party without the guest of Honor? Remembering the who is critical -there is no Christmas without Christ.

So this year as we prepare for the season my husband and I have been preparing our hearts to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas. We begin each day with a devotional and scripture to remind us of God's promises to send a Savior. We've been reflecting on how those people must have felt as they joyfully anticipated his arrival. Most of all I try to be reminded that an innocent baby came into a wicked world just to die for our sins. He came to die so that we might live.

I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. - Romans 15:13 NLT

Christmas is a joyous time, it's a season of hope, peace love and joy - all promises from our Savior. As we celebrate with family, presents and food lets remember the greatest gift we've ever been given - JESUS.

Your Turn: There is still plenty of time, are you conditioning your heart for the season? I'd love to hear about any traditions you and your family have to celebrate the birth of our Savior during this time.

  2. You speak the truth, Charity! It's so easy to make Christmas all about the gifts and finding the perfect gift for our loved ones when in reality, Jesus is THE perfect gift and the reason we celebrate Christmas to begin with. :)

  4. It's so funny, I was just thinking about how I don't know the meaning of "advent". What a beautiful definition. I love it, and the scripture you shared. Thanks for this reminder of what the season is about! : )

  5. We always went to Christmas Eve services together growing up, but I hadn't done it in years since stopping going to church. Well, we're back in business this year! Does getting my butt to church on Christmas Eve count?

  7. My husband and I have been using a devotional with Scripture, song, and a reflection question every day of Advent (we've missed a few days so far:) as we light the Advent wreath at dinner.
In my family of origin, during Advent my Mom kept an empty manager on the kitchen table and every time on of us kids did a kind act of love we put a piece of straw in the manger so that when Jesus was born he would have a nice, warm bed to sleep in...
